The Arabic word munāfiq (منافق) means "hypocrite" or "false Muslim". In Islam, it refers to someone who appears to be Muslim but is actually non-Muslim and seeks to undermine the Muslim community.
The Quran's 63rd chapter, Al-Munafiqun (المنافقون), is about hypocrites and has 11 verses.
Islamic tradition has labeled Abd Allah ibn Ubayy as a munāfiq and the "leader of the munāfiqun". Although he appeared to convert to Islam when the Islamic prophet Muhammad arrived, he remained treacherous to Islam until his death.
